How can I help my children stop fighting with each other?
While many kids naturally get along very well with their siblings, it is very common for brothers and sisters to fight. In a house with more than one person, there are bound to be problems. Children usually fight with each other because of jealousy, competition, or lack of understanding. Although sibling rivalry is normal, too much competition can make life at home difficult and stressful. In unusual, severe cases, sibling rivalry can disrupt daily functioning or affect kids emotionally or psychologically.
In the Jewish Community
Sibling rivalry is rampant in every race and religion, no matter time or place. In a typically large Jewish household, a child may fight with a sibling to acquire valuable attention or because of jealousy towards a brother or sister. A child with ten or more siblings may fight to find his own identity when surrounded by many capable and talented brothers and sisters. Although sibling rivalry is natural and often harmless, parents must make an effort to stress the importance of peace in the home and behave as proper role models for their children.
