Dear Readers:
This is the third year now that I've written a column around the time of my father's yahrtzeit (Rosh Chodesh Iyar) l'zecher nishmaso. The first was an open letter of chizuk to girls who lost a parent, and the second was a Q&A column of the origins and minhagim of the yahrtzeit day. Please pass them along to anyone who may derive chizuk from them.
This year, I wrote an essay describing the trauma of losing a parent, and begging divorced parents to keep the interests of their children first, and not create the type of toxic atmosphere that will make their children virtual yesomim. That column will appear in next week's Mishpacha magazine, and will be posted on this site after the issue is on the newsstands.
Gut Shabbos and a Gutten Chodesh,
Yakov
An Open Letter to Girls Who Lost a Parent
Yahrtzeit
(The text below appears in the dedication page of my “Living and Parenting” book.)
Hashem, in His infinite wisdom, took you from this world far too early for us to get to know you well.
However, over the years, we were introduced to you often – through the eyes of the hundreds of your friends and family members whose lives you touched so deeply.
Those eyes spoke volumes as they softened when describing your outstanding middos tovos, your kindness, and your generosity of spirit.
We are so very proud of the sterling legacy that you left us,
and feel privileged to carry your name.
With everlasting love,
Dvora Ostreicher
