Dear Readers:

Since Project Y.E.S. released the information about tonight’s conference call titled, “Purim Parenting: Keeping Our Children Safe and Sober,” we received very positive feedback from Jewish parents quite literally around the world, and more than a few questions that people would like addressed by Dr. Twersky and me during the one-hour program.

One issue that many people expressed was their desire to gain clarity about the inyan of “Ad Deloi Yoda” (lit. “until one does not know”).

Some background: Our chazal (sages) inform us, “Chayav einish l’besumei be’puria ad deloi yoda bein arur Haman l’baruch Mordechai,” which loosely translated says, that one is obligated to drink [on Purim] until he cannot discern between Haman and Mordechai.

Well; if that is the case, some are asking how can Dr. Twerski and I suggest that parents not allow their children to drink?

I decided to serve as a sh’liach (messenger) of our readers and to convey this legitimate question to Rabbi Shmuel Kaminetsky Shlit”a, who has served as the Rabbinic Advisor to Project Y.E.S. since its inception twelve years ago. He graciously offered to join our conference call and share his thoughts on this subject directly with our listeners. (For the record, I did not ask the Rosh Yeshiva what he will be saying, only that this is a question that is on the minds of many parents nowadays.)

And for those who question if these discussions and awareness campaigns work, I ask that you read Celebrating our Successes and Finding our Voices , a column I published in the Jewish Press two years ago, where I made the case that the anti-drinking campaigns spearheaded by Hatzalah and amplified by Project YES and many other organizations that work with our kids, are most certainly working, as Purim is far safer that it was before the awareness began.
