Weberman Trial Take Aways

Please, Please Speak to Your Kids ... Today!

With the Weberman trial winding down and Chanukah rapidly approaching, the critical issue of child safety will, in all likelihood, be sliding off our communal radar. Before it does, perhaps we ought to reflect on what parenting take-away lessons can be gleaned from the trial. Here are a few:

1. Trust your instincts. If something just doesn't feel right, it probably isn't.

2. Be attuned to and be aware of folks who don’t adhere to Hilchos Yichud. These are often predictors of dangerous problems.

3. Always evaluate WHAT happened, not WHO did it. Due to the Halo Effect and the very nature of abuse, anyone could be a predator – even someone you could never imagine as such. Remember; ignore the WHO and concentrate on the WHAT.

4. Finally, and most importantly, please, please speak to your kids!

There are 4 central themes of effective child safety training:

A. Your body belongs to you

B. Good touching/bad touching

C. No secrets from parents

D. No one has the right to make you feel uncomfortable.

We at Project YES plead with you to utilize the awareness generated by this trial to teach your children about safety and personal space if you have not done so yet. It is so simple, so effective, and the potential exists for such monumental tragedy if you do not give them the tools to protect themselves.

Having had a front-row seat to the indescribable carnage caused by child abuse for over 15 years, we created these user-friendly materials for parents to use and on behalf of all the kids who had their innocence and childhood robbed from them, we appeal to you that you avail yourself of them.
