Dear Readers:

This evening, I will be speaking at the Teaneck/Bergenfield Community Memorial Program in Congregation Beth Aaron at 8:30 p.m. on “The Tragedy in Eretz Yisroel – Sorting it Out Ourselves; Explaining it to Our Children.”

During the last 20 minutes of the talk, I will be speaking directly to children and teenagers in the first person and I encourage parents to engage your children directly in this conversation by emailing hashkafa (theological) questions they have posed to you about this painful topic (such as, “Why didn’t Hashem answer our prayers?”, or “What did the boys do to deserve this?”) to yhprojectyes@gmail.com. I will do my best to address the questions directly or weave responses to them into the presentation.

An unasked question is an unanswered one, so it is important to have these discussions with your kids after such a searing tragedy. We hope you will find this helpful.

Here are two columns we posted on the tragedy in Eretz Yisroel over the past two days:

1) Teiku -- Explaining the Inexplicable to Your Children, and

2) Lessons in Faith, Dignity and Courage

For those of you who cannot attend this evening, we will be professionally recording this presentation.

PS Attached, please find a “Summer Safety Message Poster” that we are offering free of charge as a public service of The Karasick Child Safety Initiative of The Center for Jewish Family Life/Project YES. Please download the PDF and post it in your shul, summer camp or bungalow colony. Education and awareness are such critical components of our efforts to keep our children safe from predators who would wish to harm them.

Here is a link to a wide range of child safety material, and here are links to three free, 5-minute child safety videos, Child Safety Video #1, Child Safety Video #2, and Child Safety Video #3 that will help you understand why child safety education is so effective and details about the four child safety messages you should be teaching your children.

It is our hope and prayer that these materials will help keep all our children and grandchildren safe and secure.
